UP polls to be held upazila-wise in multiple phases, says EC secretary
All unions within each upazila will vote on the same day.
Union Parishad (UP) elections will be held on an upazila-by-upazila basis, with all unions within a single upazila going to the polls simultaneously, Election Commission (EC) Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said today (7 September).
Speaking to journalists at Nirbachan Bhaban at Agargaon in Dhaka, he said the polls would be held in multiple phases, though the exact number – five or six – has not yet been decided.
"If some unions of an upazila vote in one phase and the rest in another, it will create disorder. So all unions within the same upazila will vote together," he said.
According to EC sources, upcoming local government elections cover 13 city corporations, 330 municipalities, around 500 upazilas and more than 4,500 union parishads.
The commission's preliminary plan is to begin the electoral cycle with the UP polls.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin recently said the commission plans to issue a schedule in September and begin local government elections with UP polls in November.
