'Vote for BNP or I won't let you live in peace': Shariatpur leader's comment sparks criticism
His remarks constitute a possible violation of electoral code of conduct, says assistant returning officer
Controversial remarks made by a BNP leader during a campaign rally in Shariatpur have led to widespread criticism and accusations of violating the electoral code of conduct.
On Saturday night (13 December) in Naria Upazila's Banglabazar area, Naria Upazila BNP Organising Secretary Matiur Rahman Sagar said, "If you vote, you will vote for BNP; if not, you will stay at home. But in front of our eyes, if you vote for that Jamaat 'razakars' and live in peace at home, I will not let you live in that peace."
The statement quickly sparked outrage on social media, prompting Sagar to remove the video from his account. However, by then, it had already gone viral through various media platforms.
Naria Upazila BNP President Dadan Munshi condemned the remarks, saying they are unacceptable and could undermine the electoral environment.
"The matter has not been officially brought to our attention yet, but if confirmed, the party will take appropriate action," he said.
The statement also drew a strong reaction from the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. The party's Naria East unit Ameer Kazi Abul Basar said the video had come to their notice and expressed firm protest, adding, "The people will give a befitting reply, and we leave the matter to Allah."
Matiur Rahman Sagar could not be reached over phone for comment despite repeated attempts.
Meanwhile, election officials noted the incident as a potential breach of the electoral code of conduct.
Assistant Returning Officer of Shariatpur-2 and Naria Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Abdul Qaiyum Khan said that the video had been reviewed and constitutes a possible violation, though no formal complaint has yet been filed.
He added that the election committee will take necessary measures if a complaint is received.
In the constituency, Mahmud Hossain Bakaul has been nominated by Jamaat, while Shafiqur Rahman is contesting as the candidate for the BNP.
