PGR celebrates 51st founding anniversary
PM Tarique highly appreciated the regiment's professionalism, discipline, dedication and sacrifices in carrying out its responsibilities
The President Guard Regiment (PGR) today (5 July) celebrated its 51st founding anniversary with due ceremony and enthusiasm at its headquarters in Dhaka.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin visited the PGR Headquarters at 9:00am, where he was received by General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the commander of the President Guard Regiment and the Regiment Sergeant Major. A smart contingent of the PGR presented the president with a state salute on his arrival, reads a press release.
The president later addressed officers, junior commissioned officers and other ranks of the regiment at Darbar Hall. Congratulating all members on the regiment's 51st anniversary, he paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War as well as the five PGR personnel who were killed while protecting former president Ziaur Rahman during his assassination in 1981.
He also remembered all soldiers who died while performing state duties and prayed for the salvation of their souls.
The president expressed hope that PGR personnel would continue to develop themselves into highly skilled and professionally competent members capable of ensuring the security of state dignitaries and performing their assigned responsibilities with dedication.
Later at 12:00pm, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived at the PGR Headquarters, where he was received by the army chief and the PGR commander and was accorded a state salute by a ceremonial guard.
At a function held at Shaheed Captain Hafiz Hall, the prime minister exchanged greetings with the invited guests and addressed PGR members.
In his remarks, he highly appreciated the regiment's professionalism, discipline, dedication and sacrifices in carrying out its responsibilities and commended its members for maintaining the highest standards in providing security to protected dignitaries.
Among others, the prime minister's defence and security affairs adviser, Cabinet Secretary, the chief of the Air Force, the assistant chief of the Navy (Operations), the principal secretary to the prime minister, senior military and civil officials, invited guests and members of the media attended the programme.
