Parliamentary body suggests 3-year warranty to ensure rural road quality
The committee was also briefed on various activities undertaken by the ministry during the government’s first 180 days.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives today (11 October) recommended retaining contractors' security deposits for three years as a warranty to ensure the quality of rural road construction, following a directive from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The committee also called for stronger monitoring of construction work to ensure that officials concerned properly discharge their duties. The recommendation was made at the committee's first meeting, chaired by AKM Selim Reza Habib.
At the meeting, members were briefed on the activities of the ministry and its subordinate departments and agencies, including initiatives undertaken during the government's first 180 days.
The committee recommended identifying arsenic-affected areas across the country and undertaking projects to ensure safe drinking water for affected communities.
It also called for intensified cleanliness drives and public awareness campaigns to control Aedes mosquitoes and prevent dengue. Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) were asked to supervise cleanliness drives in their respective areas and take necessary steps to raise public awareness.
Emphasising accountability in public service, the committee urged officials to perform their duties honestly and sincerely, without nepotism. It also recommended introducing an online attendance system for upazila-level officials to strengthen monitoring and accountability.
The committee further recommended investigating irregularities and corruption in unnecessary projects funded domestically and internationally during the previous government and taking appropriate action.
