IUBAT to observe Alimullah Miyan’s 9th death anniversary
The 9th death anniversary of Professor Dr M Alimullah Miyan, a pioneer of private university education in Bangladesh and founder vice-chancellor of the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology, will be observed today (10 May).
Professor Miyan was born on 15 February 1942 in Kailine village under Chandina upazila of Cumilla district. He passed away on 10 May 2017.
He was born into a family of freedom fighters and was the younger brother of late Bir Protik Colonel Shafiq Ullah.
Professor Miyan opened a new horizon in Bangladesh's higher education sector by introducing the concept of private universities in the country.
Through his visionary leadership and initiative, IUBAT was established in January 1991 as the country's first non-government university.
Professor Miyan had a distinguished academic and professional career.
He completed his BCom honours degree from the University of Dhaka in 1962 and MCom degree in 1963.
He later earned an MBA from Indiana University in the United States in 1968 and a PhD from Manchester Business School in the United Kingdom in 1976.
Throughout his professional career, he served for many years at the Institute of Business Administration of the University of Dhaka as both a faculty member and director.
He was also the founder chairman of the Centre for Population Management and Research.
From 1963 to 1994, he made remarkable contributions as a teacher, researcher and institutional development expert.
He also served as a visiting professor at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria.
To observe his death anniversary, IUBAT has arranged various programmes on campus, including open discussions and reminiscence sessions on his life and works, a doa mahfil and other commemorative activities.
Professor Dr M Alimullah Miyan was a visionary educator and dreamer who brought revolutionary changes to Bangladesh's higher education landscape.
His innovative ideas, leadership and contributions continue to inspire thousands of students across the country.
