No scope for Hasina to appeal; verdict must be enforced upon return: Nahid
Nahid Islam says authorities should arrest Sheikh Hasina upon her return to Bangladesh and enforce the court's verdict in accordance with the law.
National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam today (15 July) said there is no legal scope for ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina to appeal against the verdict in her case, urging authorities to enforce the ruling if she returns to Bangladesh.
Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled "July Revolution Through Memories," organised by the Dhaka University unit of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, Nahid said no appeal had been filed on Sheikh Hasina's behalf within the 30-day statutory period following the verdict.
"As no appeal was filed within the stipulated time, there is no further opportunity for appeal. We expect the Supreme Court to uphold the verdict through due judicial process and announce its enforcement," he said.
Nahid also claimed that the government had made it clear that Sheikh Hasina would not be allowed to surrender voluntarily.
"If she returns to the country, she will be arrested at the airport and the verdict will be executed in accordance with the judicial process," he added.
Referring to the events of 15 July, Nahid demanded the publication of a list of those allegedly involved in attacks carried out on that day and called for their arrest.
He also urged authorities to take action against teachers accused of supporting or legitimising the violence.
Speaking about the July movement, Nahid said, "The politics of the new Bangladesh is the politics of July. We will not return to authoritarianism. We want a democratic, inclusive and sovereign Bangladesh."
