Man kills mother, 8-month-old niece in Cumilla
Family suspects post-surgery medicine reaction led to fatal outburst.
A 65-year-old woman and her eight-month-old granddaughter were killed in an attack allegedly carried out by the woman's son in Cumilla's Debidwar upazila this morning (21 September).
The incident took place around 8am at the house of Mostafa Master in Barashalghar village.
The deceased were identified as Piyara Begum, 65, mother of alleged attacker Emon Mia, 26, and Ishrat Jahan, the eight-month-old daughter of Emon's elder brother Sujon Mia.
Emon's sister-in-law Rabea Begum was seriously injured while trying to intervene and was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital.
Piyara's elder brother Faruk, a resident of Maheshpur village, said Emon had injured his leg while playing football four to five years ago and undergone several operations. He returned home on Sunday after another operation that cost Tk70,000.
Faruk said Emon might have suffered a reaction to an injection administered for leg pain.
According to Faruk, Emon first picked up his sleeping niece Ishrat and slammed her to the ground, killing her. When Piyara tried to intervene, he attacked her with a machete and slit her throat, killing her.
When Rabea tried to save Piyara, Emon also attacked her indiscriminately with the machete, leaving her seriously injured.
Upon receiving the news, Debidwar Circle Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Shahin and a team of police reached the scene.
Senior ASP Shahin said police were investigating what led to the attack. He said Emon had recently undergone treatment for his leg injury.
Debidwar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman said locals detained Emon and handed him over to police.
"The matter is under investigation. I cannot say much at this moment," he said
