Police submitted chargesheet against Boro Sazzad, 6 others over attempted murder of Ctg businessman
Sub-Inspector Azizul Haque of Chandgaon Police Station, the investigating officer of the case, confirmed the development.
Police have submitted a chargesheet against seven people, including overseas-based criminal Boro Sazzad Ali alias Sazzad Khan, in connection with the attempted murder of a sand trader in Chattogram for allegedly refusing to pay Tk50 lakh in extortion.
Sub-Inspector Azizul Haque of Chandgaon Police Station, the investigating officer of the case, confirmed the development.
The chargesheet identifies Boro Sazzad as the mastermind behind the attack, while the other accused are Mohammad Hasan, Mobarak Hossain alias Emon, Mohammad Raihan, Fahmi Nizami Chowdhury, Nurul Haque and Kamal Uddin alias Balu Kamal.
The chargesheet also mentions that one of the attackers said, "Now go to the grave," during the attack.
The victim, Mohammad Yunus, is a resident of the Mohra area under Chandgaon Police Station in Chattogram city.
Attackers opened fire on him in front of his house around 10:30pm on 1 August last year.
The attack left him with bullet wounds on his knee, waist and other parts of the body and broken teeth. He survived despite critical injuries.
According to the case documents, extortionists demanded Tk50 lakh from Yunus through WhatsApp using a foreign number around 10 days before the incident and threatened to kill him if he refused to pay.
On 23 July, they again called him and warned that he would "go to the grave" if he failed to pay.
After failing to get the money, armed attackers arrived on two motorcycles and opened indiscriminate fire in front of Yunus's house on 1 August night.
When Yunus collapsed on the ground, the attackers assumed he had died, and while leaving the scene, one of them reportedly said, "You did not listen to Sazzad bhai, now go to the grave."
The following day, Yunus's wife filed a case with Chandgaon Police Station. After completing the investigation, police submitted charges against seven individuals. Although the original case named nine people, investigators recommended exempting two after failing to find their involvement.
Investigators said technological analysis found evidence of extortion demands and threats sent through WhatsApp from abroad. They also identified the attackers by analysing CCTV footage and other information.
Yunus said he has not yet fully recovered and continues to live in fear while enduring physical suffering, and demanded swift justice against the attackers.
Police said Boro Sazzad controls criminal activities in Chattogram and surrounding areas through an organised network despite staying abroad, and drives to arrest those involved are ongoing.
