No security threat surrounding banned AL's founding anniversary, but police remain vigilant: DMP
'June 23 marks the founding anniversary of a political party. We remain vigilant in this regard,' says DMP Additional Commissioner SN Md Nazrul Islam.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has said there is no specific security threat surrounding the founding anniversary of the banned Awami League on 23 June, although the force remains on alert ahead of the occasion.
Speaking at a press briefing today (19 June), DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Ops) SN Md Nazrul Islam said, "June 23 marks the founding anniversary of a political party. We remain vigilant in this regard.
"As in the past, necessary security measures have been taken to ensure the safety of city residents."
Security checkpoints are operating at various locations and these measures will continue, he added.
Responding to a question about the recent case involving an accused known as "Kailla Faruk", who was arrested in Mohammadpur on extortion charges and paraded publicly by police but allegedly resumed extortion activities after securing bail, Nazrul said the issue of bail falls under the jurisdiction of courts.
"We will continue to perform our duties. Whenever we find criminals, drug traffickers or extortionists, we will arrest them, gather necessary information and produce them before the court," he said.
