Gopalganj judge attached to law ministry after injuring trainee lawyer in courtroom

The government has attached a judicial magistrate in Gopalganj to the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, a day after a trainee lawyer was injured by a glass paperweight allegedly thrown during court proceedings.
A notification issued by the ministry today (23 July) stated that Judicial Magistrate Md Sujan Mia had been attached to the Law and Justice Division until further orders in consultation with the Supreme Court.

According to witnesses, a commotion broke out at the back of the courtroom while proceedings were underway. The judge reportedly asked those present several times to remain quiet before allegedly throwing the paperweight.
Lawyers alleged that Sujan Mia threw a glass paperweight from the bench during the hearing, striking Sabiha on the head. She was admitted to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Some witnesses said it was unclear whether the paperweight had been aimed at anyone in particular.
Following the incident, leaders of the Gopalganj District Bar Association lodged a verbal complaint with the chief judicial magistrate, seeking action against the judge.
Lawyers also staged protests in Gopalganj, demanding the judge's removal.
