Jubo Dal leader expelled over 'assault of constable' at Sitakunda police station
Chattogram North District Jubo Dal Vice-President Mohammad Ismail Hossain was briefly detained after assaulting a constable over a parking dispute.
The Bangladesh Jatiyotabadi Jubo Dal has expelled its Chattogram North District vice-president Mohammad Ismail Hossain over allegations that he assaulted a constable at Sitakunda Police Station in Chattogram.
In a statement issued today (2 October), the party said Ismail had been expelled, including from its primary membership, over "clear allegations" of obstructing law enforcement personnel while they were performing their duties.
Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna and General Secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam Nayan have already implemented the decision, according to the statement.
The party also said none of the expelled members would be considered responsible for the organisation's activities and instructed Jubo Dal leaders and activists at all levels to maintain no organisational ties with Ismail.
It also urged law enforcement agencies to take necessary legal action against him.
Police had detained Ismail last night (1 October) over allegations of assaulting a constable inside Sitakunda Police Station.
The constable, Mohammad Shafik, is the driver of the officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station.
The incident took place around 9pm when an argument broke out between Ismail and Shafik over parking a vehicle at the police station gate.
According to police, Shafik asked Ismail not to park his vehicle at the gate, triggering an argument. At one point, Ismail allegedly assaulted the constable, following which police detained him.
Shafik was later admitted to Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Later that night, around 50 BNP and Jubo Dal leaders and activists gathered at the police station seeking Ismail's release. They claimed the incident stemmed from a minor argument and was a misunderstanding.
Sitakunda Police Station OC Mohinul Islam told The Business Standard that Shafik was assaulted after asking Ismail not to park his vehicle at the station gate.
"We immediately detained the accused. Later, in the presence of senior officials, the matter was found to be a misunderstanding," he said.
Ismail was released around midnight after police took a written bond from him and handed him over to his wife's custody, the OC added.
