Inqilab Mancha issues 24-hr ultimatum for arrest of Hadi's killers
After nearly three hours of demonstrations, protesters vacated Shahbagh, following which traffic in the surrounding areas gradually returned to normal
Inqilab Mancha has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Khuda Bakhsh Chowdhury, demanding "visible progress" in the arrest of those responsible for the killing of its spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
The organisation's Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber announced the ultimatum today (20 December) from a protest rally at Shahbagh, held after Osman Hadi was laid to rest beside the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
"Unless the government responds regarding the arrest of Sharif Osman Hadi's killers by 5:15pm tomorrow, we will once again take position at Shahbagh," he warned.
He also demanded the identification and arrest of what he described as "Awami terrorists hiding within military and civilian intelligence agencies."
Reiterating the organisation's stance during his concluding speech at the rally, Jaber said Inqilab Mancha would resume its sit-in protest if the government failed to respond within the stipulated time.
After nearly three hours of demonstrations, protesters vacated Shahbagh, following which traffic in the surrounding areas gradually returned to normal.
Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson for the Inqilab Mancha, was laid to rest beside the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on the DU campus this afternoon (20 December), following his namaz-e-janaza at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad amid tight security and with thousands in attendance.
Hadi, also an aspiring independent candidate for Dhaka-8, was shot on December 12 while he was in a battery-run autorickshaw in the capital's Paltan area.
He was immediately rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and later shifted to Evercare Hospital on the same day as his condition deteriorated.
On December 15, Hadi was airlifted to Singapore by air ambulance for better treatment, where he succumbed to his bullet injuries on the night of 18 December.
