Measles death toll hits 560 as 5 more die in 24hrs; over 1,000 hospitalised
A total of 62 cases of measles were confirmed through laboratory testing
Five children died from measles and measles-like syndrome across the country between 8am yesterday and 8am today (27 May), according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
With the latest fatalities, the total number of deaths linked to measles and measles-like illnesses this year has risen to 560.
During the same 24-hour period, 1,056 patients with measles-like symptoms were admitted to hospitals nationwide, the DGHS said in its latest health bulletin.
Among them, 62 cases were confirmed as measles through laboratory testing.
According to DGHS data, at least 88 children have so far died from confirmed measles infections this year. In addition, 472 children died after showing symptoms consistent with measles.
The health authorities said that between 15 March and 27 May, a total of 8,834 measles cases were confirmed through laboratory testing.
The latest DGHS bulletin also shows that 67,079 suspected measles cases have been identified nationwide so far. Of them, 49,903 patients have already been discharged after receiving treatment.
