The government is reviewing a proposal to reduce passport fees for expatriate Bangladeshis, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has told parliament today (17 June).

The minister made the remarks in a written reply to a tabled question from ruling party lawmaker Khairul Kabir Khokon of Narsingdi-1 in parliament today.
Salahuddin said the number of active passport holders in the country stood at 2 crore 54 lakh 33 thousands 63 as of 4 June 2026.
Regarding passport services for migrant workers, the home minister said a proposal received from the Department of Passports to reduce passport fees for Bangladeshis living abroad is currently under review by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The government has already taken several steps to make passport services more accessible for expatriate Bangladeshis, he said.
"To make passport applications easier for Bangladeshi citizens living abroad, arrangements have been made to receive applications through mobile enrolment kits at Bangladesh missions located in remote areas of different countries," Salahuddin said.
The minister further said, "Initiatives have been taken to provide passport services to expatriate workers through outsourcing agencies at Bangladesh missions."
He also said the government is sending passports to Bangladesh embassies and missions abroad through international courier company FedEx to ensure faster delivery.
The minister also said the government has already introduced the issuance of 10-year passports for all Bangladeshi citizens aged 18 and above.
