Fakhrul hopes for stronger Bangladesh-Jica partnership
The minister says Jica’s technical support and investment will remain crucial for Bangladesh’s sustainable development.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today (5 July) expressed hope that cooperation between Bangladesh and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) would grow stronger, describing the agency as one of the country's largest development partners.
He made the remarks when Jica President Dr Tanaka Akihiko paid a courtesy call on him at his office at the Secretariat, according to a ministry press release.
Fakhrul said Jica had made significant contributions to Bangladesh's infrastructure development, local government system, safe water supply and other public service sectors.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed Jica's ongoing and future development programmes in Bangladesh. They also exchanged views on waste management, water management, capacity building in the local government sector and sustainable urban development.
The minister said Bangladesh was moving forward rapidly under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, adding that the government was working to implement development projects efficiently with the support of all stakeholders.
He also said the government was working in coordination with international development partners to make the local government system more modern, effective and people-friendly.
In this regard, Fakhrul said Jica's experience, technical assistance and investment would play an important role in ensuring Bangladesh's sustainable development.
Local Government Division Secretary Md Shahidul Hassan, Director General of the Monitoring, Evaluation and Inspection Wing Md Mahmudul Hasan, and other senior ministry officials attended the meeting.
