A Dhaka court today (15 October) sentenced Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, son of retired Public Service Commission (PSC) driver Syed Abed Ali Jibon, to four years in prison in a corruption case over acquiring assets beyond his known sources of income.
The verdict was delivered by Dhaka Divisional Special Judge BM Tarikul Kabir in the morning, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Delwar Jahan Rumi confirmed.
The court also fined Siam Tk20,000, with an additional six months' imprisonment in default of payment.
It also ordered the confiscation of assets worth Tk31.81 lakh held in his name, which were found to be beyond his known sources of income.
Zakir Hossain, deputy assistant director of the ACC, filed the case against Siam on 5 January 2025 over allegations that he had acquired illegal assets worth Tk37.30 lakh between 3 September 2021 and 30 June 2024.
On 30 December that year, Zakir submitted a charge sheet against Siam after completing the investigation.
Investigators found that Siam owned movable and immovable assets worth Tk31.81 lakh that were inconsistent with his known sources of income.
The ACC arrested Siam on 20 January in connection with the case. His father, Syed Abed Ali, a former driver of the Public Service Commission (PSC), came under the spotlight over a question paper leak scandal involving recruitment examinations. Siam has remained in jail since his arrest.
