A dead Ganges River dolphin was recovered from the Halda River yesterday (19 May), marking the 49th dolphin death recorded in the river so far.
The adult female dolphin was found near Sipahi Ghat in Raozan with the help of local residents, according to researchers involved in the recovery process.
The dolphin measured 239 centimetres in length, or around 7 feet 10 inches, and weighed an estimated 91 kilograms.
Researchers said the carcass likely surfaced around five to six days after death.
Initial observations found advanced decomposition, strong odour and severe decay in the mouth, abdomen and tail areas.
The dolphin was examined under the supervision of Dr Manzoorul Kibria, coordinator of the Halda River Research Laboratory at Chattogram University.
The laboratory's PhD researcher Shah Muhammad Qaiser and Nurul Hakim assisted in preparing the inquest report.
Confirming the recovery, Dr Manzoorul Kibria said the dolphin was buried at the IDF Halda Research and Training Center, after examination, while its teeth were collected for future research purposes.
