Environmental activist Abul Hossain Raju said the largest whale previously found on Kuakata beach measured 58 feet in length.
A 56-foot-long dead baleen whale has washed ashore on Kuakata sea beach in Patuakhali, making it the second-largest whale found stranded there in the past two decades.
The carcass, about 18 feet wide, washed ashore at the Kauarchar point of the beach this afternoon (29 June).
Mohipur Forest Department Range officer Md Moniruzzaman said the dead whale had been buried after necessary measures were taken.
Samples will be collected in future to investigate the cause of death, he added.
Environmental activist Abul Hossain Raju said the largest whale previously found on Kuakata beach measured 58 feet in length.
He expressed concern over the increasing number of whale and dolphin carcasses washing ashore along Bangladesh's coast, stressing the need for comprehensive research and investigation to identify the underlying causes.
According to Raju, the whale is believed to have died about a week before it washed ashore.
He said whales can die from a range of causes, including marine pollution, ship strikes, entanglement in fishing nets, food shortages and the impacts of climate change.
