Eid-ul-Azha: 24 temporary cattle markets to be set up in capital
Of the 24 temporary markets, 12 will be set up under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and another 12 under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC)
A total of 24 temporary cattle markets are to be established across the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, one of the largest religious festivals for Muslims, expected to be observed on 27 or 28 May, depending on moon sighting.
To meet the growing demand for sacrificial animals, the two city corporations of Dhaka have already begun preparations. Of the 24 temporary markets, 12 will be set up under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and another 12 under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
In addition to these, two permanent cattle markets – Gabtoli (under DNCC) and Sarulia (under DSCC) – operate year-round. Altogether, residents will have access to 26 markets to purchase sacrificial animals this year.

The 12 temporary markets in the DSCC area will be located at West side of Postogola crematorium along the bank of the river, North Shahjahanpur Maitree Sangha Club grounds, Rahmatganj Club premises, Amulia Model Town open space, Shyampur Kadamtali truck stand area, Aftabnagar (Eastern Housing) Blocks E, F, G, H (Sections 1 & 2), Near Shikdar Medical, Amin Mohammad Group land, From Kajla Bridge to Matuail Mridha Bari water pump road areas, Dayaganj to Jurain rail crossing roadside spaces, Mostamaji intersection near Green Banasree Housing, Southeast side of Brothers Union Club, North side of Golapbag outfall staff quarters
According to DSCC Chief Property Officer Mohammad Mobasher Hasan, these markets will operate for five days including the day of Eid. Leaseholders must pay the lease rate along with cleaning fees, 15% VAT, and 10% income tax. Authorities also reserve the right to cancel or relocate any markets if necessary.
Apart from the permanent Gabtoli market, DNCC will set up 12 temporary markets at Khilkhet market area under the elevated expressway, Mirpur Section-6 (Eastern Housing open space), Kalshi Balur Math (16 bighas), Near Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, Merul Badda (Ward 21) near kitchen market, East Hazipara (Ward 23) beside Ikra Madrasa, and 40-foot road area in Bosila, Mohammadpur
These initiatives aim to streamline cattle trading, reduce congestion, and ensure a more organised way for the faithful to complete their act of sacrifice.
