Education minister calls for gym, indoor games facilities at JnU
The minister says sports and extracurricular activities are important for students’ intellectual and personal development .
Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has called on the authorities of Jagannath University (JnU) to establish gymnasium and indoor sports facilities for both male and female students.
He made the call while speaking as the chief guest at a reception for the university's 21st batch, organised by Jagannath University unit of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatradal, today (16 September).
Recalling his childhood visits to Old Dhaka, the minister said he had seen well-equipped gymnasiums and bodybuilding competitions in the area. However, he said no good gymnasium had been established in the area since Jagannath College became a university.
"Vice-chancellor sir, it does not take much to do this. If necessary, I will help you. Please arrange indoor games and gymnasium facilities for both male and female students," he said.
Emphasising the importance of sports and extracurricular activities in students' intellectual and personal development, Milon said students should be encouraged to participate in sports, debates and other activities alongside their academic studies.
He also warned students about the negative effects of social media and urged them to use it constructively.
"We are seeing today how social media is trying to influence us in a negative way. We have to move away from that," he said.
The minister also said attempts were being made to create instability by using fictional content on social media.
Addressing the students, Milon urged them to prepare themselves for the future by making use of the education and experience they gain at university.
"Bangladesh will move forward under the leadership of Tarique Rahman," he said.
He also said Chatradal was preparing for the future Bangladesh as an organisation based on ideals.
