Editors' Council, NOAB to protest mob attacks undermining press freedom at journalists' assembly today
The Editors' Council and the Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (Noab) will jointly organise a media professionals' assembly titled "Media Assembly 2026" on Saturday (17 January) in Dhaka, protesting recent incidents of mob violence and what they termed as attacks on democratic values and freedom of expression.
The programme will be held from 10:00am to 1:30pm at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) in Khamarbari.
According to the organisers, Bangladesh has recently witnessed a series of organised incidents of violence, including mob attacks, which they described as unprecedented assaults on freedom of expression and democratic principles.
The assembly aims to register a united protest against such incidents and to reaffirm support for independent, responsible, and courageous journalism.
It will also focus on safeguarding a democratic media environment, ensuring the safety of journalists, and upholding the professional dignity and rights of media workers.
NOAB President A K Azad and Editors' Council President Nurul Kabir, in a joint call, urged media professionals to participate actively in the programme, stressing that collective action is necessary to protect press freedom and responsible journalism in the country.
Registration to join the programme is scheduled from 9:30am to 10:00am.
