Office assistant suspended for slapping child at Barishal's Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital
A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
A video showing the slapping of a child patient inside the orthopaedic operating theatre at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal went viral on social media yesterday (7 March), prompting the suspension of an office assistant.
According to the child and the guardian, GM Nazmul Hasan, who works at the hospital, slapped the child after the eight-year-old patient had come to receive treatment.
Child abuse is a punishable offence under existing laws.
Pending the resolution of the allegations brought against him, Nazmul has been suspended with effect from yesterday.
According to a separate office order signed by the hospital's director, Brig Gen Dr AKM Mashiul Munir, a three-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
Prothom Alo reported that while playing, one of the child's fingers was nearly severed, leaving the child writhing in severe pain.
After being admitted to the hospital, the child was taken to the operating theatre.
When an injection was being administered, the child began crying loudly out of fear, according to the daily. At that moment, the operating theatre staff member slapped the child.
