Dhaka's air quality 4th worst in the world this morning
Dhaka’s air was classified as ‘unhealthy’, according to the air quality and pollution city ranking.
Dhaka, the overcrowded capital of Bangladesh, ranked fourth among cities with the worst air quality, recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 181 at 9:06 am today (10 October).
Dhaka's air was classified as 'unhealthy', according to the air quality and pollution city ranking.
Singapore, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Kolkata in India occupied the first, second and third spots on the list, with AQI scores of 200, 198 and 192, respectively.
When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 101 and 150, air quality is considered 'unhealthy for sensitive groups'. A reading between 151 and 200 is classified as 'unhealthy', while readings between 201 and 300 are considered 'very unhealthy'. A reading of 301 or above is classified as 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents.
The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air in a city is and what associated health effects may be a concern.
The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and ozone.
Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution. Its air quality usually becomes unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon.
