Dhaka South declares first Saturday of month as 'cleaning day'
First drive to be held on 9 May
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam has declared the first Saturday of every month as "cleaning day" to prevent Aedes mosquito-borne diseases and strengthen urban sanitation in the capital.
He made the announcement today (4 May) at an exchange meeting held at Nagar Bhaban on dengue and chikungunya prevention.
The first programme will be observed across Dhaka South on 9 May.
According to decisions taken at the meeting, government offices, residential quarters, educational institutions, and areas under Rajuk and Rehab, along with privately owned plots, will carry out cleaning drives and remove mosquito breeding grounds on their own initiative.
Authorities were also instructed to ensure professional standards in the quality, application, and monitoring of insecticides used in mosquito control, along with proper training of staff. Speaking at the meeting, the Dhaka South administrator said public awareness and cleanliness were key to preventing dengue and chikungunya.
"If institutions and citizens keep their surroundings clean, mosquito-borne diseases can be eliminated," he said.
He warned that no negligence would be tolerated in mosquito control activities. Representatives from the Directorate General of Health Services, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Dhaka Medical College, Border Guard Bangladesh, Islamic Foundation, Rajuk, Bangladesh Railway, Rehab, the Directorate of Education, and Jagannath University, among others, attended the meeting.
