AL activities linked to December to face strict action: DB chief

Any form of subversive activity by the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, in connection with December will be dealt with strictly, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) chief Additional Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam has said.

"No activities prohibited by law will be allowed. We are alert to prevent such activities and will take necessary legal action," he said.

Shafiqul made the remarks in response to questions from journalists at a briefing at the DMP Media Centre today (7 October).

Asked about the possibility of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina returning to the country in December and whether the Awami League might organise programmes or engage in sabotage over the issue, he said any activities prohibited by law would be prevented.

"Those who have been barred by law, whose activities have been banned by law, will not be allowed to carry out any such prohibited activities in the country. We are taking a very strict stance on this and will take appropriate legal action," he said.

Ensuring the safety of people and their property, particularly in Dhaka, is one of the police's key responsibilities, he said.

"We are committed and remain vigilant in carrying out this responsibility. We will thwart any subversive activity," he said.

The DB chief said legal action against those involved in activities of the banned party would continue, along with arrest drives.

Viral audio of former Cantonment OC Rakibul found authentic

Asked about the viral audio recording involving former Cantonment police station OC Rakibul, Shafiqul said its authenticity had been confirmed.

However, he said investigators were examining whether any information had been leaked through the audio.

Further legal action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation, he said.
