Youth beaten to death in Narayanganj after being accused of mugging
The deceased's father claims that members of a local social organisation tied Sijan to an electric pole at the Masdair intersection and assaulted him
A 25-year-old man was allegedly picked up from his home and beaten to death by a mob on accusations of mugging in Narayanganj's Fatullah, police and family members said.
The incident took place in the West Masdair area at around 11pm yesterday (4 July). The deceased, Sijan, was the son of Yunus Miah alias Innu, of the area.
According to Innu, members of a local social organisation formed by Kawsar, the imam of a local mosque, called Sijan out of his house at around 8pm. He alleged that the group tied Sijan to an electric pole at the Masdair intersection and assaulted him.
"When he lost consciousness due to the beating, he was taken to Khanpur 300-Bed Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead," Innu said.
However, Imam Kawsar denied the allegations that people from his organisation beat Sijan up.
Kawsar said the organisation called Al Falah was formed to address security concerns in the area. He claimed there had been multiple allegations against Sijan, including mugging.
"He was brought from his home to be handed over to the police. But before that could happen, local people beat him. Those involved in the assault are not members of the social organisation," he said.
Kawsar claimed the incident occurred amid longstanding tensions involving local Kishore (teen) gangs and their criminal activities in the area.
Locals also alleged that Sijan was involved in mugging and led a local Kishore gang.
Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Alam said police had recovered the body and found injury marks on it.
"The matter will be investigated, and those responsible will be arrested," he said.
