Tribunal allows questioning of ex-IGP, ex-DMP chief in Chhatra Dal leader killing

A tribunal today (14 June) allowed questioning of former inspector general of police (IGP) Shahidul Haq and another ex-official in a crimes-against-humanity case over the 2015 staged "crossfire" killing of Khilgaon Thana Chhatra Dal leader Nuruzzaman Jonny.
The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT), led by Justice Md Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, also set 26 June for submission of the investigation report in the case.
The other accused is former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia.

Prosecutor Faruk Ahmed sought permission to interrogate Shahidul and Asaduzzaman for one day each. He also requested time to submit the investigation report.
The two former police officials were produced before the tribunal this morning from jail.
According to the prosecution, Jonny was former general secretary of Khilgaon thana unit of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal.
On 19 February 2015, police picked him up in front of Dhaka Central Jail. JCD leader Mohiuddin was also with him.
Later that day, around 3:30am, police killed Jonny in the Khilgaon playground, enacting a "crossfire."
A crimes against humanity case was filed over the incident against then-DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia and then-IGP Shahidul Haq. The investigation remains underway.
