Raozan-based criminals suspected in several killings in Ctg, crackdown planned: SP Masud Alam
The SP said district police, the army, RAB and intelligence agencies are coordinating efforts to curb criminal activities in Raozan and other areas.
Chattogram Police Superintendent Masud Alam has said law enforcement agencies suspect the involvement of Raozan-based criminals in several killings and violent incidents in different parts of Chattogram, announcing that a coordinated crackdown will be launched soon.
"Several killings and violent incidents have taken place in Raozan in the post-August period. At the same time, the involvement of Raozan-based criminals has also surfaced in connection with some incidents that occurred in Chattogram metropolitan areas," he said today (17 May) during a meeting with journalists in the district police conference room.
"We are working on the matter. Since I took charge recently, I am first trying to understand the internal situation and realities. Conducting operations without accurate information may lead to mistakes," he added.
The SP said district police, the army, RAB and intelligence agencies are coordinating efforts to curb criminal activities in Raozan and other areas.
"We are preparing to work together on a large scale. We will do whatever is necessary to protect people's lives and property. No criminal activity will be tolerated. We will maintain a zero-tolerance stance in this regard," he said.
Describing Chattogram as a major transit route for drugs, Masud Alam said yaba and other narcotics enter through the Cox's Bazar border and are distributed to other parts of the country via Chattogram.
"Keeping this in mind, we are planning to further strengthen anti-narcotics drives," he said.
The police superintendent also said strict action would be taken if the law and order situation deteriorates anywhere in Chattogram, regardless of political affiliation.
Referring to the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha, he said security measures would be strengthened at around 245 cattle markets across the district, including more than 50 permanent markets.
"If cattle traders carry large sums of money, they will receive police assistance as needed. If anyone feels there is a security risk, they can inform the concerned police station, and we will arrange a police escort," he added.
Masud Alam also said police are planning a permanent deployment in the controversial Jangal Salimpur area of Chattogram. Currently, two temporary police camps are operating there, while the government is planning to establish a police training centre and academy in the area, he said.
