The police have arrested two suspects in connection with the shooting so far
Listed criminal Yasin Khan Palash, known as "Kailla Palash," passed away early today (20 June) while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka, a week after being shot near his residence in Rampura.
The 43-year-old breathed his last at around 1am at Evercare Hospital, confirmed Hatirjheel Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Asaduzzaman.
He added that the body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
On 12 June, Palash was shot near his residence adjacent to the Rampura TV Centre area shortly after completing his Jummah prayers.
He was initially rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition before being moved to Evercare Hospital on 14 June.
Following the attack, his wife Mahmuda Khanam lodged a case at Hatirjheel Police Station, naming 11 individuals and accusing an additional seven to eight unidentified suspects.
The police have arrested two suspects in connection with the shooting so far.
Hatirjheel police raided the Badda area on 13 June and detained Md Imam Hossain. According to OC Asaduzzaman, investigators identified Imam by analysing the CCTV footage, which revealed that he had assisted the shooter in fleeing the scene on his motorcycle, which has since been seized.
Imam was subsequently produced in court, where a six-day remand for questioning was granted.
The following day, 14 June, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested another suspect, identified as Md Maruf Sultan alias Ferdous, 37, during a raid at his residence in the Uttar Noyatola Chairman Goli area under Hatirjheel Police Station.
According to police records, Palash was a convicted offender in the murder case of Jubo Dal leader Mizanur Rahman Mizan, who was shot and killed in Rampura on 29 May 2002.
Although a lower court had initially handed down the death penalty to Palash for his role in the killing, the High Court later commuted his sentence to life imprisonment.
Palash was released from prison on bail approximately a month before the shooting.
