Chhatra Shibir leader killed in Gaibandha clash over school committee election
Police detained one suspect, identified as Ashraf, in connection with the incident.
A local leader of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir was killed and another person seriously injured in an alleged attack linked to a dispute over the election of a government primary school managing committee president in Saghata upazila of Gaibandha today (21 June).
The deceased, Saiful Islam, 22, was president of the Bonarpara union unit of Chhatra Shibir. The injured, Salauddin, son of Habibur Rahman of Tair village, is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
Police detained one suspect, identified as Ashraf, in connection with the incident.
Witnesses said the violence erupted around 3pm following an altercation between Kachua Government Primary School headmaster Habibullah and Mukul, son of Jahidul Islam of Bati village, over the managing committee election.
Saiful and Salauddin, who were present at the time, reportedly supported the headmaster during the dispute. At one stage, Mukul, his brother Palash, and associate Ashraf allegedly attacked the duo with sharp weapons, critically injuring them.
Locals rushed the victims to Saghata Upazila Health Complex. Saiful was later transferred to Gaibandha General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Salauddin was shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for advanced treatment.
Saghata Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Alam said additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain order, and efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused.
Saghata Upazila Jamaat Ameer Maulana Ibrahim Hossain condemned the killing and demanded the swift arrest of those involved.
