Sylhet triple murder: Prime suspect Babul placed on 4-day remand

A Sylhet court today (16 August) placed Babul Mia, the prime suspect in the killing of a female domestic help and an elderly couple in Sylhet city, on a four-day remand.

Sylhet Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Farhana Sultana passed the order when police produced him before the court with a 10-day remand prayer in the case, confirmed Mohammad Saiful Islam, deputy commissioner (North) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.

On 12 August, police recovered the bodies of an elderly couple and their domestic help with their throats slit from a flat of their four-storey building in the Mitali Residential Area of Raynagar.

The deceased were identified as MA Sattar, 82, his wife Suraiya Begum, 72, and their domestic help Tahmina, 25.

Babul was arrested from a colony in the Rajbari area of Raynagar on the same day.

Sattar was a former director of the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry and an adviser to a ward-level Awami League unit.

Police said Babul had developed a relationship with Tahmina and allegedly killed all three after failing in an attempt to have a physical relationship with her.

Police also claimed that Babul had confessed to the killings.

However, Selina Sultana, daughter of the deceased couple, filed a written complaint with Kotwali Police Station on Friday night without naming Babul as an accused.

In her complaint, Selina expressed suspicion that lawyer and Impulse Builders Ltd Chairman Advocate Sirajul Islam was involved in the killings.

The investigation has not yet substantiated the allegation.

Selina also disputed the police's preliminary explanation for the killings. The police initially attributed the incident to an alleged relationship between Tahmina and Babul.

Selina alleged that her parents and the domestic worker were killed in a premeditated attack by hired killers over a long-standing land dispute.
