Lt Gen (retd) Masud Uddin remanded for 3 more days
While in custody, he fell ill around 2pm on 12 April and was quickly taken to the same hospital, where he was admitted after undergoing various medical tests. After receiving treatment, he was discharged on 27 April.
A Dhaka court has placed Lieutenant General (retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury – a controversial figure associated with the "1/11" period – on a fresh three-day remand in a murder case filed over a killing during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam passed the order after a hearing today (27 April).
After completion of an eight-day remand in the second phase, the investigating officer of the case, Detective Branch Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin, produced the accused before the court and sought a fresh seven-day remand.
According to the remand application, Masud had earlier been granted a four-day police custody on 11 April.
Following a medical examination at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he was interrogated in accordance with legal procedures.
While in custody, he fell ill around 2pm on 12 April and was quickly taken to the same hospital, where he was admitted after undergoing various medical tests. After receiving treatment, he was discharged today (27 April).
The application stated that important information regarding the incident had been obtained from the accused during interrogation, which is aiding the investigation.
As the probe is ongoing, further police remand is necessary to verify the information provided, it added.
Defence lawyer Towhidul Islam Sajeeb opposed the remand plea, arguing that the accused had been seriously ill for a prolonged period and was undergoing treatment for the past 15 days.
He said the accused is around 70 years old and had already been taken on an eight-day remand earlier in the case.
He alleged that the accused was forcibly discharged from the hospital despite doctors' reluctance and claimed irregularities in the discharge certificate.
Sajeeb also argued that there had been no new progress from the previous remand and suggested that questioning could be conducted at the jail gate if necessary.
Opposing the defence, state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon told the court that the accused had previously filed cases and allegedly persecuted current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
He further alleged that the accused had attempted to suppress Khaleda Zia and contributed to enabling Sheikh Hasina to become authoritarian, claiming such developments did not occur overnight.
He added that information provided by the accused is being verified and sought a seven-day remand in the interest of the investigation.
After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day remand.
According to the case statement, a person named Delwar Hossain was shot during an attack on protesters in the capital's Mirpur-10 area on 19 July 2024. The accused allegedly opened fire from different directions during the protest.
Delwar, who took part in the movement, sustained critical bullet injuries and was first taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases before being shifted to a private hospital in Shyamoli, where he died while undergoing treatment on 21 July that year.
The victim's wife, Mosammat Liza, filed the murder case with Mirpur Model Police Station on 6 July 2025.
Masud Uddin was arrested in the capital's Baridhara area on 23 March. The following day, the court granted a five-day remand, followed by five separate remand orders totalling 22 days prior to the latest order.
