Indictment hearing in arms case against ex-law minister Anisul deferred to 24 Sept
Anisul was arrested by police in the Sadarghat area of the capital on 13 August 2024 while allegedly attempting to flee by river following a tip-off.
A Dhaka court has deferred the hearing on charge framing against former law minister Anisul Huq in a case filed under the Arms Act at Banani Police Station, fixing 24 September for the next hearing.
Judge Moin Uddin Chowdhury of Dhaka Special Tribunal-4 fixed the new date today (23 August) following a petition filed by the defence.
Anisul was produced in court from jail during the hearing.
Defence lawyer Suman Hossain said Anisul had a licensed pistol, but the documents related to the firearm were lost during the July Uprising in 2024.
"We are trying to obtain duplicate documents. As we have not yet been able to collect them, we sought more time for the indictment hearing. The court granted the petition and fixed 24 September as the next date," he said.
According to the case statement, Anisul owned a licensed pistol registered in his name under Banani Police Station.
The home ministry suspended all firearm licences issued for personal security between 6 January 2009 and 5 August 2024 and directed licence holders to deposit their weapons by 3 September 2024.
However, the case alleges that Anisul neither deposited the licensed firearm with the police station nor informed the authorities about it between 4 September 2024 and 5 May 2025.
The complaint further states that investigators found no one at the accused's address and received no information regarding the deposit of the firearm.
It also says no record was found showing that he had purchased any ammunition.
Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Jane Alam Dulal filed the case over the incident.
After completing the investigation, Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Yadul Haque pressed charges against Anisul on 29 August last year.
Anisul was arrested by police in the Sadarghat area of the capital on 13 August 2024 while allegedly attempting to flee by river following a tip-off.
He was later placed on remand in several murder and attempted murder cases and is currently in jail.
