HC grants bail to Emi in 7 March speech case
The High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher issued the order along with a rule today (30 April) after hearing a bail petition filed by Emi
The High Court has granted interim bail to Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi, former vice-president of the Shamsunnahar Hall Students' Union at the University of Dhaka, in an Anti-Terrorism Act case over playing Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's 7 March speech.
The High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher issued the order along with a rule today (30 April) after hearing a bail petition filed by Emi.
According to the case statement, three people were detained on 7 March at Chankharpul intersection in the capital while playing Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's 7 March speech on a loudspeaker.
The following day, the court ordered that they be sent to jail.
Other than Emi the two other accused are Md Asif Ahmed Shoikot, former employment affairs secretary of the banned Chhatra League's Shahidullah Hall unit of Dhaka University, and Abdullah Al Mamun, another leader of Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall unit.
The case alleges that the accused chanted "provocative slogans" using loudspeakers facing a mosque and attempted to revive activities of the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League as part of an alleged anti-government conspiracy. They are also accused of obstructing police duties and attempting to snatch Md Asif Ahmed Shoikot from police custody.
At the time of the incident, a group of students led by Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) representatives AB Jubayer and Mohammad Mosaddek detained Abdul Al Mamun and Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi and handed them over to the police.
Police later filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Shahbagh Police Station.
