A Dhaka court today (9 April) sentenced Faisal Karim Masud, also known as Rahul or Daud, the prime suspect in the murder case of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, to 10 years of imprisonment in an arms case.
Dhaka's 18th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mahmudul Mohsin tried the convict in absentia as he has been in an Indian jail since the arrest there, said Ismail Hossain, the bench assistant of the court.
The court handed down the judgment after testifying to 13 out of 14 prosecution witnesses.
Earlier, on 5 April, the court had set 9 April to deliver the judgment after concluding arguments.
According to the case statement, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) raided a flat in the Baitul Aman Housing Society area under Adabor Police Station on 7 November 2024, suspecting drug-related activities.
Sensing the presence of the Rab personnel, Faisal tried to flee but failed as he was detained.
During the drive, an illegal foreign pistol and four rounds of bullets were recovered from the flat, reads the statement.
The next day, Rab official Md Mashiur Rahman filed a case against him under the Arms Act with the police station.
After the investigation, police pressed a chargesheet against him on 28 March last year.
Until 17 November last year, he had been out of jail on bail in the case.
Meanwhile, on 12 December, around 2:20pm, assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on Hadi on the Culvert Road in the Puratan Paltan area of Dhaka, leaving him critically injured.
Later, he had been shifted to a Singapore hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment there on 18 December
Faisal was named as a prime suspect in the murder. After the investigation, the Detective Branch submitted a chargesheet against 17 individuals, including Faisal, on 6 January.
However, Inqilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber submitted a no-confidence petition on 15 January.
Accepting the petition, the court ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to conduct further investigation into the case, and the probe is yet to be submitted.
