Former Somoy TV MD shown arrested in Tk2.33cr embezzlement case, denied bail
Dhaka court rejects bail, orders ex-Somoy TV MD to remain in jail.
A Dhaka court today (3 August) showed former Somoy Television managing director (MD) Ahmed Zobayer arrested in a case filed over embezzlement of around Tk2.33 crore from the channel and denied his bail.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan passed the order today after the investigation officer produced Zobayer before the court and sought to show him arrested as an accused in the case, said defence lawyer Farhad Hossain Niyon.
He opposed the petition, while the complainant's lawyer argued in favour of the arrest. After hearing both sides, the court allowed the petition, rejected Zobayer's bail and ordered him to remain in jail.

According to the case statement, Zobayer withdrew Tk2.33 crore from Somoy Television's funds in violation of company rules while serving as its managing director.
The complaint alleges that after he was relieved of his duties, the company asked him to return two vehicles provided by the organisation along with the withdrawn funds, but he refused.
It also states that City Group, the owner of Somoy Television, served him with a legal notice demanding the return of the assets but he did not respond. The case was subsequently filed before the court under New Market Police Station.
Earlier, on 18 June, Zobayer surrendered before the court and sought bail in a separate fraud and forgery case. The court rejected his bail petition in that case as well and sent him to jail. He has remained in custody since then.
