Former Desh TV MD Arif Hasan now arrested in another July Uprising murder case
Defence lawyer Tahmina Sultana opposed the petition, telling the court that her client was being harassed through a series of cases
A Dhaka court has approved a police petition to show former Desh TV managing director Arif Hasan arrested in a murder case filed at the capital's Airport Police Station over the killing of a car driver named Babul during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain issued the order today (18 June) following a petition filed by police, confirmed State Prosecutor Harun Or Rashid. Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector of Airport Police Station Md Abu Sayeed, produced the accused before the court and sought permission to show him arrested in the case.
According to the petition, Arif Hasan acted as the principal financier behind the incident, while his associates were present at the scene and actively participated in the crime. The investigating officer argued that it was therefore necessary to show him arrested in the case.
Defence lawyer Tahmina Sultana opposed the petition, telling the court that her client was being harassed through a series of cases. She argued that Arif Hasan had never been involved in politics and had already been shown arrested in nine separate cases.
She requested the court not to approve a fresh arrest in this case.
The prosecution opposed the defence's arguments. After hearing both sides, the court granted the police petition.
According to the case statement, during the July Uprising, on 18 July 2024, car driver Babul was critically injured after being shot by assailants in the Uttara area. He later died while undergoing treatment at Uttara Women's Medical College Hospital.
Following the incident, Babul's wife, Surma Begum, filed a murder case with Airport Police Station on 22 July that year.
Arif Hasan was detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on 16 November in the same year as he tried to board a plane and was later arrested in a case lodged with the capital's Airport Police Station over allegedly attempting to murder a person named Sajib during the July Uprising.
