Tribunal to decide tomorrow whether to accept charges
The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has submitted charges against eight people, including former Dhaka University vice-chancellor ASM Maksud Kamal and writer Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, over alleged crimes against humanity linked to attacks on protesters at the university during the July Uprising.
The charges were submitted to the registrar's office of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 today (16 September). The tribunal is scheduled to hold a hearing tomorrow on whether to accept the charges, according to the prosecution.
The other accused are DU Professor AKM Jamal Uddin, former Appellate Division justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, then Bangladesh Chhatra League president Saddam Hossain and general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan, and the organisation's then DU unit president Mazharul Kabir Shayan and general secretary Tanbir Hasan Shaikat.

Manik, Jamal Uddin and Shaikat are in custody, while the other five are absconding.
The prosecution alleged that the accused were involved in incitement, conspiracy, attempt and abetment in connection with attacks on protesting students on the DU campus during the 2024 uprising.
Speaking to reporters after filing the charges, Prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim alleged that Maksud Kamal had made provocative statements and taken part in a conspiracy.
"He made provocative statements and was involved in the conspiracy. This led Chhatra League, Jubo League and police to attack the protesters," Tamim said.
We have submitted charges over the matter, he added.
The prosecution said the charges were prepared based on evidence and documents collected during the investigation.
An investigation report against the eight accused had earlier been submitted to the Office of the Chief Prosecutor in August for review before the charges were filed.
