A Dhaka court has granted bail to Abdur Razzak Bin Sulaiman Riyad, a former leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and a student of Presidency University, in an attempted murder case.
After a hearing on Monday (16 March), the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Awlad Hossain Mohammad Junaid granted him bail until 12 April.
Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Department confirmed the matter.
He said the court granted Riad bail upon a petition filed by defence lawyer SM Zakir Hossain, on a bond of Tk500 until 12 April.
On 26 February, Presidency University student Nirjon Sardar Bandhan filed the attempted murder case with Gulshan Police Station, naming Riad and 10 others as accused.
Another 10-22 unidentified individuals were also accused in the case.
On the same day, Riad along with three others from the same institution – Md Riadul Howlader, Md Alif Ahmed Ashik and Sayem Sikdar – were sent to jail.
Later, on 5 March, the court granted police a two-day remand for Riad following an application. However, remand and bail petitions for the other three accused were rejected.
On 13 March, Riad was sent back to jail after the remand period ended.
Earlier on 12 March, his three associates – Riadul Howlader, Alif Ahmed Ashik and Sayem Shikdar – were granted bail.
According to the case statement, the victim Nirjon and his friends had previous enmity with the accused.
It alleges that around 3:30pm on 26 February, when Nirjon met the accused on the fourth floor of Presidency University, they asked him to participate in activities related to their permanent campus and convocation.
While he was consulting the university proctor Md Anisur Rahman regarding the matter, accused Riadul and Sayem, allegedly on the instruction of Razzaq, attacked him with a chair, causing injuries to his back and chest.
The complaint further states that accused Razzaq struck him in the face with a switch gear knife with the intent to kill, injuring his nose and causing severe bleeding. He was also beaten indiscriminately, resulting in bruises on different parts of his body.
The accused allegedly threatened the victim when his friends and teachers at Presidency University came forward to help him.
Police from Gulshan Police Station later arrived at the scene and detained them.
