Ex-DGFI director Afzal Naser placed on fresh 3-day remand in attempted murder case
Police produced Afzal Naser before the court after completion of an earlier three-day remand.
A Dhaka court has placed former dismissed DGFI director Md Afzal Naser on a fresh three-day remand in connection with a case filed at Kotwali Police Station over the attempted murder of Anik Kumar Das, a student of Jagannath University.
The order was issued today (8 May) by the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain following a hearing, confirmed Public Prosecutor Mohammad Shamsuddoha Sumon.
Police produced Afzal Naser before the court after completion of an earlier three-day remand.
The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector KM Abdul Shariful Islam of Kotwali Police Station, sought a further seven-day remand to question him.
According to the remand plea, the accused provided important information related to the case during questioning, and authorities are currently verifying those details while the investigation continues.
Evidence has been found indicating Afzal financed efforts to suppress students during the 2024 July Uprising.
It further alleged that, under his instructions, widespread acts of violence were carried out to crack down on protesting students and civilians.
The plea argued that further intensive questioning of Afzal was essential to uncover the main mystery behind the case and ensure a proper investigation.
After hearing the application, Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon granted a three-day remand instead of the seven days sought by police.
Earlier, on 5 May, a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court had placed Afzal on a three-day remand in the same case.
According to the case statement, Anik Kumar Das was injured on 16 July 2024 during the July Uprising when a procession passing the main gate of Jagannath University and heading towards the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court allegedly came under sudden gunfire from activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
He was initially treated at Dhaka National Medical College Hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On 21 November 2024, Anik filed the case at Kotwali Police Station, naming 253 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, as accused.
Earlier, on 29 March, Naser was arrested by detectives from a residence in Mirpur DOHS in the capital. Since then, he has been shown arrested and taken on remand in multiple cases.
