AL leader Nazrul Islam sent to jail in July killing case, remand hearing tomorrow
Police sought seven days of remand for the Satkhira district Awami League general secretary in the murder case over Daffodil International University student Ramiz Uddin Ahmed Rup.
A Dhaka court today (28 July) sent Satkhira district Awami League General Secretary Md Nazrul Islam to jail in a case filed over the killing of Daffodil International University student Ramiz Uddin Ahmed Rup during the July Uprising.
The court also set tomorrow (29 July) for hearing a police plea seeking seven days' remand for Nazrul Islam.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Mohammad Junaid passed the order after a hearing this afternoon.

Arif Reza, sub-inspector of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Division, confirmed the matter.
He said the investigation officer of the case, Tejgaon Police Station Sub-Inspector and Detective Branch (Tejgaon Division) Inspector Mohammad Saiful Islam, produced Nazrul before the court and sought a seven-day remand.
In the remand petition, police said preliminary interrogation of the accused revealed information and evidence related to the allegations mentioned in the case statement.
Police said Nazrul's permanent address is in another district and his details have not yet been fully verified. They also claimed he might go into hiding if granted bail.
Seeking remand, investigators said custodial interrogation was necessary to uncover the motive behind the incident, identify other accused and alleged instigators, verify the locations of absconding suspects and arrest those involved in the killing.
Earlier on 27 July, Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch arrested Nazrul from the Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital.
According to the case statement, 21-year-old Ramiz Uddin Rup, a student of the Computer Science and Engineering department at Daffodil International University, joined the anti-discrimination student movement with his friends on 24 August 2024.
The complaint alleges that Rup was shot in his right eye near the Karwan Bazar metro rail station by the accused during the protest. The attackers allegedly left him on the road, assuming he was dead.
His friends and fellow protesters later took him to Padma Hospital in Kathalbagan for treatment. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Rup's father, AKM Rakibul Ahmed, filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station. The case names former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 222 others as accused.
