Container vessel runs aground near Chattogram Port after steering failure

A container vessel ran aground near the Chattogram Port channel this afternoon (3 August) after suffering a technical steering failure, prompting a coordinated salvage operation by port authorities and maritime agencies.

According to a statement issued by Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) Secretary Sayed Refayet Hamim, the incident occurred at around 2:15pm when the container vessel MV CNC URANUS experienced a steering malfunction while navigating the channel.

As a result of the mechanical failure, the vessel struck the No 2 Red Buoy before running aground on the retaining wall.

Port authorities immediately launched rescue and salvage operations, deploying tugboats Kandari-4 and Kandari-11 to refloat the vessel. The Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Coast Guard and other relevant maritime agencies have also been mobilised and are working alongside the CPA to secure the vessel and ensure safe navigation through the port channel.

No casualties have been reported, according to the port authority. CPA officials said further updates would be provided as the salvage operation progresses. Confirming the incident, CPA Member (Harbour and Marine) Commodore Ahmed Amin Abdullah told The Business Standard, "Though the vessel grounded, the port channel remained uninterrupted." "Salvage operation is on following safety protocol," he added.
