Chinmoy Krishna Das released on 5-hour parole to attend mother's funeral
Chinmoy left Chattogram Central Jail around 4pm under police security, while additional security was deployed along his route and at the funeral venue.
Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, currently behind bars in multiple cases, was released on five-hour parole today (10 September) to attend the funeral of his mother, Sandhya Rani Dhar.
He was released from Chattogram Central Jail around 4pm and left for Shri Shri Pundarik Dham Ashram in Hathazari under police security.
The jail authorities received the letter approving his parole shortly before 4pm and released him after completing the required procedures, said Syed Shah Sharif, jailer of Chattogram Central Jail.
Additional security measures were taken around the funeral, said Kazi Mohammad Tarek Aziz, additional superintendent of police of Hathazari Circle.
"Additional security has been arranged along Chinmoy Krishna Das's route and at the venue. More members are still being deployed," he said.
Chinmoy's mother Sandhya Rani Dhar, 70, died at Shri Shri Pundarik Dham Ashram in Hathazari around 9:15am today after suffering from illness for a long time.
She had received treatment at Chattogram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital, where tests detected cancer in her body.
Earlier, the family had sought Chinmoy's parole after learning about his mother's illness, but the request was not approved.
Later, his brother Anjan Kumar Dhar applied for parole so that Chinmoy could attend his mother's funeral. Following the application, the Chattogram district administration approved five-hour parole today.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Additional District Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman said, "Following his brother's application, we approved the request for his release on parole."
Chinmoy's name before joining religious life was Chandan Kumar Dhar. He is known as the spokesperson of Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote.
A sedition case was filed against him on 25 October 2024, over allegations of disrespecting the national flag following a rally of Bangladesh Sanatan Jagaran Mancha in Chattogram. Police arrested him in Dhaka on 25 November.
Later, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was killed in clashes on the Chattogram court premises after Chinmoy's bail petition was rejected.
Chinmoy was later named as an accused in the Alif murder case. Police subsequently submitted a charge sheet against Chinmoy and 38 others in the case filed with Kotwali Police Station.
The case is now undergoing witness examination and cross-examination at the Speedy Trial Tribunal.
Chinmoy also faces several other cases. Although he was granted bail in some of them at different times, he remains in jail as proceedings in multiple cases are still pending.
