Chhatra Dal, Shibir clash at Barishal University over presence of outsiders
The scuffle took place in the morning in the presence of the university’s vice-chancellor and proctor.
A scuffle broke out between activists of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chatradal and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir at Barishal University today (5 August) over the presence of outsiders at a Shibir programme.
Several people from both sides were reportedly injured in the incident.
The scuffle took place in the morning in the presence of the university's vice-chancellor and proctor.
Shibir brought out a rally titled "Odommo July" to mark the anniversary of the fall of the autocratic government.
Chatradal leaders obstructed the rally over the presence of outsiders. An argument subsequently broke out and escalated into a physical altercation between the two groups.
The situation was brought under control following the intervention of the vice-chancellor and proctor.
Barishal University Shibir unit Secretary Zakaria Islam Babu said, "Remnants of the Awami League are obstructing the July programme. Our programme was peaceful, but Chatradal obstructed it like terrorists in an attempt to foil it."
University Chatradal unit General Secretary Arif Hossain Shanto said Shibir had brought outsiders to the programme to stage a show of strength.
"When we protested, Shibir activists launched an armed attack on us first. We did not expect such an attack after the July movement. I condemn and protest the attack," he said.
Barishal Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Belal Hossain said police went to the university after learning about the clash between the two student organisations.
"Additional police were deployed immediately after the incident. We have urged both sides to remain calm," he said. The university administration could not immediately be reached for comment.
