Cultural Affairs State Minister Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyam today (10 May) stressed the need for regular maintenance of canals alongside excavation work, saying excavation alone would not ensure long-term benefits for agriculture and water management.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the excavation of a 570-metre canal in the Mala area of Alfadanga upazila in Faridpur.
The state minister said water is essential for both life and agriculture, and canals play an important role in preserving water and supporting farming activities.
He said canals help drain excess water during heavy rainfall, while stored water can later be used for irrigation when needed, benefiting farmers.
Ali Newaz said the government has taken a plan to excavate 20,000 kilometres of canals across the country to revive agriculture through improved water preservation and management.
However, he said regular maintenance of canals must also be ensured so that people can continue benefiting from the waterways in the long run.
Former MP and Jatiotabadi Krishak Dal central committee Vice-President Khandaker Nasirul Islam and Jamaat-e-Islami MP from Faridpur-1 Mohammad Elias Ali Mollah, among others, attended the programme.
