Break-in attempt over stamp theft led to murder of woman, daughter in Ctg: Police
Police added that the investigation is still ongoing, including whether others were involved in the incident and whether there were any additional motives behind the killings.
Police today (15 June) claimed to have solved the mystery behind the murder of a woman and her teenage daughter in Chattogram's Anwara on Saturday night (13 June), saying the duo was stabbed to death after the main accused in the case filed over the killing was caught while attempting a break-in to steal a loan-related stamp.
"The main accused, Limon Barua Tejpriya, has been arrested. Based on information provided by him, the knife used in the killing and the victims' mobile phone were also recovered," said Superintendent of Police Md Masud Alam at a press briefing.
He added, "Immediately after the incident, multiple teams were formed involving the district Detective Branch and Anwara Police Station. The main accused was arrested following a manhunt."
According to the police, on Saturday night, Annie Barua, 40, and her daughter Priyonti Barua, 16, were killed at their home in the Chenamoti Barua Para area under Ward No 6 of Paraikora union. Annie's five-year-old son, Piash Barua, also sustained stab wounds in the attack.
Citing investigation findings, police said Limon had been waiting near the back door of the house with a knife, intending to steal a stamp belonging to the victim's husband, Sujan Barua.
At one point, Annie came out of the house and spotted him. When she raised an alarm, the accused stabbed her.
Police added that hearing her mother's screams, Priyonti rushed to the scene and was also stabbed indiscriminately.
At the briefing, SP Masud said, "During preliminary interrogation, the accused confessed to his involvement in the killings and provided important information."
Police further said that after the incident, Limon fled the area and repeatedly changed locations while attempting to go into hiding.
He was arrested last night (14 June) in Patiya following operations across different parts of Chattogram, the SP said.
Masud added that, following Limon's arrest, the murder weapon was recovered from a canal behind the victims' house based on his information. "Annie's mobile phone was also recovered from a ditch beside the railway line in Patiya."
"Despite difficult terrain, the accused's attempts to hide, and efforts to conceal key evidence, we were able to solve the case, arrest the accused, and recover evidence within a short time," Masud said.
