Five people, including four members of a family, were killed when a private car hit a parked gas cylinder-laden truck on the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway in Faridpur's Bhanga early today (2 June).
The accident took place near Maligram underpass in Bhanga upazila, Shibchar Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said.
The deceased were Ariful Islam, 25, a Malaysia returnee, his mother Nurjahan Begum, 50, sister Ayesha Akter, 28, brother Rakibul Islam, 18, and private car driver Zahid Hossain.
Two children, Ashraful Hossain, 8, and Tasfia, 3, were injured in the crash. They are Ayesha's children and are undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Family members said Ariful returned from Malaysia on Monday night after 10 years. His family had gone to Dhaka airport from Jashore to receive him and were returning home when the accident occurred.
Police said the private car hit the back of the parked truck shortly before dawn, leaving four people, including the driver, dead on the spot.
"We recovered four bodies and rescued three injured people from the scene before sending them to hospital," OC Mizanur Rahman said.
The injured were first taken to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex. Rakibul was later referred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Ashraful and Tasfia were also transferred to the hospital for further treatment.
"Firefighters had to cut open the damaged car to recover the victims," said Abu Jafar, station officer of Bhanga Fire Service.
OC Mizanur Rahman said the bodies were handed over to the family after they arrived in Jashore in the afternoon, and legal action is underway.
